Francesco Sarcone-Chasing Space Music and Sound Design For Motiongraphic

At Design Interviews

Interview with Francesco Sarcone : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Francesco Sarcone : The idea was to make an interaction between visual and audio, creating the sound out of nothing in the same way the space is created by something that we don't know and we can't really understand. A speech from Alan Watts inspired the video: "... that's what we find as we investigate the Universe: make the microscope bigger and bigger, and we will find ever more minute things; the Universe expands, because it's running away from itself." .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Francesco Sarcone : I wanted to create the sound of the emptiness and lead the audience inside of it. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Francesco Sarcone : I will release an album with my best soundtracks and this track will be included in extended version. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Francesco Sarcone : I can't exactly say how long in took because it was a personal work, i didn't have a deadline, so i did it in my free time... but i can say that i had this project on my desk for about 5 months! .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Francesco Sarcone : I followed an inspiration, i worked with the visual designer on several short project just to do what we wanted to do and see how far we can go. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Francesco Sarcone : In some ways i was inspired by the work of Diego Stocco, a famous sound designer who use to create sounds from objects and self built instruments; i like his fork flow. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Francesco Sarcone : Musical instruments (guitars, bass, percussions); music production software (Ableton Live); 2 condenser microphones to record the field sound of an empty big room; 1 contact microphone to capture the sound of some small objects. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Francesco Sarcone : I collaborated with Marco Bagni, the visual designer of this project, he gave me some feedbacks about the audio and we worked together to make it deeper. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Francesco Sarcone : The hardest part of this work was to create sounds out of nothing and to describe the emptiness with sounds. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Francesco Sarcone : Once i finished this work i wanted to have some feedbacks and i decided to find an international competition. .
